Telescopes Look Back in Time!
Have you ever wanted to look back in time? Well, you can through a telescope!
If you want to look through a telescope into space, it's not always as it seems. It takes time for light to travel to your telescope, so we see things as they looked when the light first started to travel.
When you look at the sun through a telescope, it takes such a long time for the light to travel from the sun to the telescope, that you see the sun as it was 7 minutes ago! When looking at Jupiter through a telescope, you see it as it was 33 minutes ago. It takes Pluto 4 hours for its light to travel. If you are looking at Proxima Centauri (the nearest star to the sun), you see it as it was 4.3 years ago! Sirius (the brightest visible star) takes 8.6 years for light to travel. For Polaris (the North Star), you see it as it was 430 years ago. Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy (the nearest galaxy to ours) takes 25,000 years for its light to travel and for my favourite galaxy, Large Magellanic Cloud (brightest galaxy), you see it as it was 163,000 years ago! That's amazing!
So now you know, when you look through a telescope it's not always as it seems!
